VidEG Genre5 Nicki Minaj - Anaconda

ACT: Nicki Minaj
TRACK: Anaconda
YEAR: 2014
DIRECTOR: Colin Tilley
GENRE: Rap
MAIN AUDIENCE: Male and Female 15-24

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:

There is no link between the visuals and the lyrics making this a concept and performance video.

GENRE CHARACTERISTICS:

this links closely with the pop but also the rap genre as nicki minaj seems to straddle both on a regular basis. It has the objectification elements of Laura Mulveys theory in rap but also slightly in pop but also works closely with pop to show the 'empowerment' of women.

INTERTEXTUALITY?

Non that i recognise.

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT?:

Performance and concept.

PERFORMANCE STYLE:

provocative, with close up and extreme close ups of her bum and chest as this is what she is known for. This also links closely to the genre as Rap is typically male skewed audience therefore has to appeal, but as she is female can also closely link her fans to females as she is shown to be strong and independent.

STAR TREATMENT:

There is heavy focus on nicki minaj however there is also focus on Drake who features at the end of the video who gets a lap dance off nicki minaj.

PACE + ANY VARIATION OF PACE:

There is a variety of pace and a couple of noticeable drops in the song.

SHOT VARIETY + NO. OF SETUPS:

They use a variety of shots and a number of different locations. However they were all filmed as a scene rather than in a natural locations.

DIRECTOR STYLE:

The director works with a number of famous artists collaborating songs using a lot of effects. They all have the same similar themes.

VidEG Genre4 Jessie J - Bang Bang

ACT: Jessie J
TRACK: Bang Bang
YEAR: 2014
DIRECTOR: Hannah Lux Davis
GENRE:Pop
MAIN AUDIENCE: Male and Female 15-24

The song focus's on the empowerment of women. The song features 3 female solo singers, singing individually but also collaboratively. Each has brought their own style to create a video with lots of 'flare'.

The video opens with the titles of the starts which are going to be featured in the video using bright neon pink font in a bold sans serif font

But mainly to attract a male audience to the video by using male gaze, using provocative poses and close ups.

There is also a series of shots  in which the 3 solo singers are in shots collaboratively - this is more apparent towards the end of the music video.

This screen shot is a prime example of 'women empowerment' showing the protagonist at the front and in shot with a band of women behind cheering.

Another example of this would be Nicki Minaj and her rap influences have enabled a certain amount of objectification to women in order to appeal to a male audience.

For me, personally, i think the video isn't memorable and has no real wow factor, or produces anything that i think would be worthy to include in our own video. However on the contrary they all still pursue their own individual branding which could be argued as being a  advertising themselves as a brand.

VigEG Genre3 Delilah - Love You So

ACT: Delilah
TRACK: Love You So
YEAR: 2014
DIRECTOR: Emil Nava
GENRE:Pop
MAIN AUDIENCE: Male and Female 15-24

I came across this whilst looking at another example from the same director. He works with many mainstream artists and also does a bit of work alongside for L'Oreal.

The video works on a concept and performance basis. And takes already existing footage from various locations and scenes.

There is a lot of performance within the video and this is shown just using a plain background for most. The video is kept fairly simple with a few special effects being used. The effects used do work really well. Some of these include slow motion which is used quite a bit.

There are a series of close up and extreme close up shots.

One of the effects used is this layering effect:

However what I also like is the variety of shots but also the cleanliness of some of the shots that look simple but so well excecuted for example the shot below:

Although I do like the background it must after some time it does start to look a little clinical having said that, i realise this is the look she was going for.

There is also a series of other scenes that are not related making this video performance with concept but could also be argued narrative due to the couple involved but I dont agree.
