Lady Gaga - Product Placement

We were aware of Lady Gaga taking part in some product placement within her videos, because in Bad Romance we were aware of Beats, Nemiroff Vodka and Carrera sunglasses. However I came across a website which claimed Lady Gaga uses 8 different products within Bad Romance. However we struggled to find the last one!

VidEG Genre4 Jessie J - Bang Bang

ACT: Jessie J
TRACK: Bang Bang
YEAR: 2014
DIRECTOR: Hannah Lux Davis
GENRE:Pop
MAIN AUDIENCE: Male and Female 15-24

The song focus's on the empowerment of women. The song features 3 female solo singers, singing individually but also collaboratively. Each has brought their own style to create a video with lots of 'flare'.

The video opens with the titles of the starts which are going to be featured in the video using bright neon pink font in a bold sans serif font

But mainly to attract a male audience to the video by using male gaze, using provocative poses and close ups.

There is also a series of shots  in which the 3 solo singers are in shots collaboratively - this is more apparent towards the end of the music video.

This screen shot is a prime example of 'women empowerment' showing the protagonist at the front and in shot with a band of women behind cheering.

Another example of this would be Nicki Minaj and her rap influences have enabled a certain amount of objectification to women in order to appeal to a male audience.

For me, personally, i think the video isn't memorable and has no real wow factor, or produces anything that i think would be worthy to include in our own video. However on the contrary they all still pursue their own individual branding which could be argued as being a  advertising themselves as a brand.

VidEG 13 Madonna - Ray Of Light

ACT: Madonna
TRACK: Ray Of Light
YEAR: 1998
DIRECTOR: Unknown
GENRE:Pop, Electro - Pop

  • The video is a day in a life filmed in four minutes. It was filmed in Sweden, New York and Las Vegas using time-lapse photography. The shoot took 14 days. Madonna had the idea for doing the closing nightclub scene. It won the 1998 Grammy for Best Music Video Short Form and the MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year.
  • The lyrics reflect Madonna's interest in spirituality and her faith
  • Microsoft used this in a 2001 advertising campaign to promote its Windows XP operating system.
  • Some of the video is filmed using a green screen.
  • The lyrics link to the visual in some aspects but not in others and not as strongly as it does in her other visuals which is one reason why I picked it.
  • The genres are reflected strongly with the night club scenes reflecting the electronic and electro - pop well.
  • there is a lot of star treatment used in this video which is to be expected.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:

There is no link between the visuals and the lyrics, meaning it to be a concept video. It is also shot in a range of locations, with some use of a green screen for extra effect. Madonna although older is still represented in a sexualised way wearing slightly revealing clothing for her age.

GENRE CHARACTERISTICS:

Genre has become an even more diverse, however this follows some of the characteristics that we would expect such as the sexualised dancing as well as upbeat music and cutting to the beat.

INTERTEXTUALITY?
Non that I am aware of.

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT?:

The video is a concept video as it doesn't really follow a narrative and is quite random and has no apparent relation to the lyrics.

PERFORMANCE STYLE:

The performance style is singing and dancing with madonna being the main focus with many of the shots taken are with the events in the background, this is done by a series of layers or use of a green screen. some of the dancing that has been shown has had some of the frames deleted in order for it to look 'alien' like but because of the nature of it it could be described as cavorting.

STAR TREATMENT:

Star treatment has been featured heavily in this video with the concentration solely on madonna, This is stereotypically done in order to sell the track but to also establish and promote the artist and the album. This is also an example of Laura Mulvey's theory as the woman has blonde hair and is wearing revealing clothing - Mulvey's theory being that they are being objectified for the gratification of men. This can also be added with the view of madonna being a symbolic character and is known as the queen of pop.

PACE + ANY VARIATION OF PACE:

The pace is varied throughout with scenes of slow motion, the cuts are fairly quick which reflects the tempo of the song at times. There are a range of inter-cutting shots with quick transitions and shots last no more than a few seconds. Some of the shots are very creative and use different camera angles with extreme close ups and use layering and green screen techniques.

SHOT VARIETY + NO. OF SETUPS:

various shot variety shown with range of creative shots.

LOCATION/S + MISE-EN-SCENE:

In the video there are a series of locations used but all seem to be taken in the vicinity of one another. that being the city but also the use of the green screen.

NOTABLE SHOTS/FRAMING:

close up shots of body

VidEG 8 Flo Rida - Good Feeling

ACT: Flo Rida
TRACK: Good Feeling
YEAR: 2011
DIRECTOR: Unknown
GENRE: Dance, Pop
MAIN AUDIENCE: Male and Female 15-24

  •  The song features Flo Rida on a journey using various modes of transport across a city with the first opening lines featuring a panoramic view of the city whilst he is stood on top of a building. Some of the lyrics do match the narrative but it is more about how he has become someone new than anything.
  • Therefore promoting the themes of having a good time and having a party.
  • The video does use some subtle product placement with the use of headphones and an iPad mini with him rapping on the screen whilst he is holding it up to create an effect. - This I thought was innovative and different from the other songs and videos that also represent this type of music.
  • As with many rappers there is some very brief scenes of women being objectified as this is a common theme across most rap songs.
  • And with scenes in clubs which are also common with a lot of electronic and dance songs.
  • I am also a fan of the ending which includes lots of pictures that are tiled which then change saturation of black out completely in order to create an image of himself within them.
  • There is strong star treatment  however there are others included in the video although the main focus is him.

VidEG 7 The Vamps - Can We Dance

ACT: The Vamps
TRACK: Can We Dance
YEAR: 2013
DIRECTOR: Unknown
GENRE: Pop
MAIN AUDIENCE:  Female 11-24

  • The song is based on teenage awkwardness and a house party, during and then the aftermath of cleaning up by getting fans on twitter to help and parents coming home after finding the video of the events on Youtube. This shows how social media is being utilised in videos as well as virally by bands and artists to connect with fans.  Also the use of product placement with juice, computers, clothing and cereal.
  • There is a strong link between the lyrics in the song and the narrative which is based because of the strong pop background. The lyrics and narrative mostly relate to love, party and having a good time which are the themes in almost all pop songs.
  • Star treatment is a big part in the video as there is only one main singer, the others sing and play music but there is much more focus on one than the rest of the band, which to me seems abit unfair when you call the collaboration a band.
  • The girls are represented not in an obscene way but there are subtle references to short skirts, low cut tops, with perfect hair. Relating to the typical cheerleader type, as well as the guys looking the typical jock type.

VidEG 6 Avicii - Wake Me Up

ACT: Josh Kumra
TRACK: Wake Me Up
YEAR: 2013
DIRECTOR: Unknown
GENRE: EDM, Folktronica
MAIN AUDIENCE: Male and Female 15-24

  • The song is a mix of EDM, Soul and Folktronika which is a different move from what Avicii is well known for. The narrative relates closely to the video which shows 2 girls being isolated from a group, until one runs away on horseback to find who she is more suited to be with as they have marks on their body which separatre them from their local community until she finds people who she is alike.
  • The lyrics talk about how you should follow your heart and find a path.
  • There is no real objectification of women except maybe a low cut top but its hard to compare to others due to its diverse sound. However what can be noticed is the amount of women being used and in the begininng they are shown to be inferior this being created through camera angles and point of view shots.
  • Product placement and advertising for Sony Xperia phones.
